Venus is the second planet from the Sun and one of the main protagonists in SolarBalls. He houses the Venera robots and is the hottest planet in the Solar System, with a surface temperature at 464°C,
Design
Venus is an orange-red sphere with yellow stripes on his equator, representing his surface. He has two equally-sized eyes and they are much on top from the mouth.
In his youth, his surface was brown-orange with dark and light areas.
Personality
Venus is a short-tempered rocky planet who gets aggressive when provoked too much. He hates the fact that he was named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty, which the other rocky planets would occasionally tease him for. He is usually seen being dominant towards Mercury which he would make the latter stay in his orbit, rarely allowing him to interact with the other planets sometimes, even bullying him verbally by calling him 'pipsqueak' because of his small size. Venus also nearly killed Mercury by throwing an asteroid at him in a fit of rage after the latter teased him for his name's meaning in Venus wants a Makeover.
He is also shown being verbally aggressive towards Earth and Mars when they accidentally create a ruckus when they play with each other by calling them idiots and ordering them to go back to their orbits. The irony is that he would get out of his orbit himself from time to time to give commands. In "Venus Wants a Makeover", even Jupiter and Saturn can be seen looking at him in fear of his wrath.
However, there are times when Venus does show that he cares about others, though he usually shows that in the form of harsh commands or a scolding when his fellow planets do something stupid, especially Earth since his 'bright' ideas can end his Earthlings if he makes a wrong move, mostly when he is playing asteroid dodge ball or tag with Mars.
Venus is shown to have some softness in his core despite his rough manners. In What If We Replace Jupiter? - Part 1 he warned Mercury of an asteroid and came forward to protect him from harm, but he didn't want to let other planets know it. Later in The Battle of Planet X - Part 1, he saved the Earth from a flying asteroid. This shows that Venus really cares about his friends, but he prefers not to show it and hides it behind his rude mask.
In the episode, "Venus ALMOST had life!?", it is shown that Venus' short-tempered personality might have been caused by him losing all the properties required for a planet to support life. The episode also supports the fact further that Venus actually wanted to have life on his own surface (which was shown previously in "The Space Trash Problem"), and that he experiences emotional pain over the truth that he can't, resulting in a personality of unstable emotions.
Although Venus and Mars were really upset with the Earth, they were still very determined to protect him, shown in "The Battle of the Planets." When Ganymede and Europa shared their ideas of attacking the Earth and prompted the two rocky planets to join their cause, Venus and Mars declined, leading to the two Galilean moons using what they called "Plan B" which was when all the moons revealed themselves and attacked the two planets with asteroids. Nevertheless, the two rocky planets still decided to protect the Earth. Despite their efforts, they were eventually defeated due to the sheer outnumbering of the moons.
Venus did say he doesn't like himself, which is shown in “The Rocky Planets”. He states in the episode that he doesn't like his orbit, atmosphere or himself.
In his youth, Venus was shown to be more friendly and to have a deep love for Theia that he would defend her when he heard that something is troubling Theia. He is also shown to be very jealous and a bit clingy as he didn't like when Proto was with Theia, and because of this, he probably didn't want Proto-Earth to apologize to her. It is presumed he has gotten anger issues from getting rejected by Theia, losing his habitability, and causing the collision (which was eventually partially confirmed). His dislike for himself in The Rocky Planets seems to be explained by him regretting his actions in the Theia Arc.
Trivia
- He is one of fourteen characters to have an opposite gender of the god/goddess they are named after - the other thirteen are Haumea, Charon, Thebe, Ceres, Io, Neso, Galatea, Sao, Halimede, Umbriel, Tethys, Kallichore, and Proxima Centauri.
- However, in LEGO Planets! (feat. @Bricksane), Venus was portrayed as a female in Astroson's dream. This makes Venus the only planet to be presented as both genders in episodes. This also makes Lego Venus the first “female” planet pictured, since Eris is a dwarf planet and Theia would not be introduced until much later.
- Earth and Ariel are debatable. Earth is associated with Gaia, which is an Earth goddess, however the word "Earth" is not associated with any god with any gender. Ariel was a male in an original Alexander Pope play, but more females kept playing his role, and the Disney movie "The Little Mermaid" popularized Ariel as a feminine name.
- Titan wasn't named for a god, but was named for the titans, which is a category of gods. This was due to people believing that Titan was the largest moon for a while, until more refined calculations confirmed that Ganymede was the largest.
- Planet X has not been discovered yet, and therefore, has no name.
- Proxima Centauri technically fits in this group because all Centaurs in Greek Mythology were male, the constellation Centaurus was named after Centaurs, and Proxima was named after Centaurus.
- According to Alvaro on a YouTube reply, Venus actually hides his atmosphere to look cool.[1]
- Titan also hides his atmosphere partially, but for unknown reasons.
- The irony of the fact that he is drawn without an atmosphere, is that in real life, Venus has the densest atmosphere.
- Similar to Uranus, his eyes are slightly larger.
- In “POV: Venus cools down!”, Venus is shown with oceans and green continents, albeit briefly. Since the green coloring of Earth's land from space is due to photosynthesizing plants and algae, this technically makes Venus the third character shown to sustain life, after Earth and Titan.
- However, his appearance in it contradicts his SolarCard appearance.
- Venus is shown to be insecure about his appearance and his desire to be like Earth. He even states in “The Rocky Planets” that he didn't like himself. Later on in “What if the planets were ordered by SIZE? - Part 2” Venus would take Earth's place in the Solar System, later being confronted with him stating it was his only chance while Earth consulted him around how he'd lose all of his friends.
- Venus is one of 13 characters to have their own plush.
- Venus is one of the only characters to remember his past.
- Others include Triton, Mars, Jupiter, and Planet X.
- It is possible Mercury knows the past, given how he brought up Venus and Theia in The Solar System is EMPTY!? - Part 3.
- Saturn remembers some of his past, since he speaks to Jupiter about Planet X. Although he appears to not remember how he got his rings (despite him only getting them 400 million years ago, along with the destruction of a major saturnian moon).
- Venus is the only celestial body to have both male and female voices.
- Venus and Uranus, despite their limited interactions, have many similarities. With both being known to have smelly atmosphere, both disliking their names, both rotating clockwise, and both being insecure.
- Uranus has the coldest recorded temperatures of any planet, despite being closer to the Sun than Neptune (although Neptune does have a colder average temperature) and Venus has the hottest temperatures, despite being further from the Sun than Mercury.
- Venus and Uranus were also the two characters in What if the planets were ordered by SIZE? - Part 2 to be the least willing to return to their orbits, preferring their neighbor's (Earth and Saturn, respectively).
- They are both also close friends with a character who is known to have memory issues (Earth and Neptune, respectively).
- They both may have suffered collisions in their youth that led to their odd rotations/tilts, which may have also contributed to their extreme temperatures (Uranus' core being unable to retain heat, and Venus' core rotating so slowly he lost his magnetosphere, accelerating heating on his surface).
- Despite being further from the Sun than Mercury, he is hotter due to his dense atmosphere trapping heat within it (making him about 464 degrees Celsius compared to Mercury's average of 167 degrees Celsius).
- Although while his card in SolarCards cites his mean radius as 6,051 km, it's missing the ".8" trailing number at the end, meaning it should be 6,052 km.
- Venus is the second fastest celestial body in the Solar System (barring the Sun, who orbits the Milky Way's center of mass at 230 km/s), moving at about 35.0 km/s.
- He is slower only than Mercury, who moves at approximately 57.3 km/s.
- Venus has the most extreme axial tilt of all the planets, being tilted 177 degrees (which is believed to be due to a large impact early on). This tilt makes Venus basically upside down, and as a result appears to rotate clockwise, making him the only planet other than Uranus to do this (the rest of the planets rotate counterclockwise).
- It is theorized that this large impact is also the reason Venus’ days are so long (taking 243 Earth days compared to his 225 Earth day orbit), and this may be part of the reason for his currently hostile environment. Venus currently does not need a magnetic field, as his atmosphere acts like one, either trapping or reflecting most of the harmful radiation from the Sun.
- This eventually happened in the episode The Solar System's True Scale - Part 2 where all the planets ended up in their real orbits and real tilts.
- Venus, despite his hellish surface conditions, is considered a "sister" or "twin" of the Earth, as they both have similar sizes (both are the largest rocky planets), mass, density, and composition. However, this has never been mentioned in the series and will likely not be considered canon.
- This is also added to by the fact that it was eventually revealed that Earth and Luna are biological siblings, being the children of Proto and Theia, while Venus has no biological connection to them.
- From the episode The Solar System is EMPTY!? - Part 3 it is revealed that Venus' eyes can also turn red like Europa's and Sun's when he is mad. This makes him the third character to have such a feature.
- It is also revealed in this episode that Venus could have had feelings for Theia.
- In the episode The First Planets - Part 2 this was confirmed.
- It was shown in the episode The First Planets - Part 2 that Venus was a bit "nicer" when he was young.
- In The Crash of Earth and Theia! - Part 4 it was revealed that Venus was partly to blame for the collision of Theia and Proto-Earth, however it wasn't intentional and he pushed Theia only so that she would meet Proto-Earth and be happy again.
- Venus, as of The Solar System's True Scale - Part 2, Venus is shown being upside down, the only planet being shown like that.
