The Sun is a main character and main antagonist in SolarBalls. He is the star at the center of the Solar System.
Design
The Sun is a yellow sphere mottled with darker spots. He is outlined with fire which is constantly moving. His eyes are rather small, and they are equal in size.
It was also shown that when he was younger, he seemed to have freckles.
He is considered in some sense the king of each planet and the bearer of light of the Solar System.
Personality
The Sun in his current stage of life is shown to be very aggressive and tends to have extreme mood swings. He can also be a bit too strict towards his planets, demanding them to obey his orders right away and aiming his solar flares at them (likely from fear of the past). He also acts clingy (especially towards the rocky planets, Mercury more so than the others) and isn’t afraid to defy others opinions, but he still cares about his planets nonetheless.
However, he has shown to occasionally be kind and caring for his planets, especially Mercury, and believes that both of them are best friends. Initially he used to aim all his solar flares at Mercury. But when he got fed up and tried to leave his orbit, Sun promised he would aim his solar flares at someone else, like Venus, as long as everything goes back to normal. He also enjoys telling puns (which are called "Sun Puns") , despite the complaints from his planets.
He also knows how much Earth cares about his Earthlings and tried to stop him from heading towards him during the episode "The Earth is heading to the SUN!?"
He values the order of the whole system, shown when he got annoyed about the revolution stuff, and decided to have a trial to settle the disparities. He cares about the celestial bodies in the Solar System, warning them not to pass the Roche Limit. He also cherishes the harmonious relationships in the Solar System, and wants to know more about the Moon Revolution, as seen in The Solar System Trials - Part 2.
As the star in the system, Sun has an objective attitude towards the moons and planets. He quickly found out that Luna and Titan were defending Earth, rather than the moons’ side. He's shown to be inclined to jump to an unreasonable solution, as he would banish anybody that has a threat to the balance of the Solar System.
This was shown in “The Solar System Trials - Part 3” when he banished Ganymede and Europa for starting the Moon Revolution, leading the attacks on Mars and Venus, and attempting to wipe out life on Earth. This possibly comes from the Sun constantly seeing his early terrestrial planets die due to the imbalance in the Solar System, causing him to develop Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, in the form of a desperate need of balance in his Solar System.
He also seemed to relate to the moons in some way, as he seemed afraid after Europa asked if he knew what it was like to confront a bigger celestial body. He was referencing Toliman and Rigil, who picked on him in the early universe and a big star (Arcturus), which scared him.
It's hypothesized that the Sun has some sort of long-term trauma from directly witnessing an unknown white supergiant going supernova before being blasted away from everyone else (The Big Bang - Part 1), which partially explains his current personality and behavior.
The Sun also seems to be hypocritical whenever he places importance on the balance of The Solar System, but he claims he doesn't need balance in Search for Planet X - Part 3, exhibiting arrogance and acting in a self-centered way by looking down upon the moons (especially Titania).
In the Big Bang - Part 2, in the early stages of the Solar System, he was shown to be very lenient towards the gas giants; allowing them to change orbits. However, as the terrestrial planets began to form and collide (he seems to have a lot of trauma from this) and die due to the gas giant's movements, he started to force them to stay in their orbits, locking Jupiter in the Inner Solar System as he was a huge ball of gravity and could hurt the little ones, thus starting his strictness for the orbits.
In the Big Bang - Part 3, after the Sun sees that the rocky planets are all but destroyed after Jupiter's Grand Tack, he's devastated, and then enraged. Within the same episode, after Jupiter and Saturn ejected Planet X to prevent the truth of the Terrestrial Planet's destruction coming out, he's absolutely enraged at the fact that Planet X left the Solar System, screaming at his loudest possible voice that "GOOD RIDDANCE, PLANET X! JUST LEAVE MY SOLAR SYSTEM! WE DON'T NEED YOU, WE HAVE EVERYTHING WE NEED HERE!", implying that the trauma caused by the constant destruction of the terrestrial planets left a deep mark in the Young Sun's ability to control his emotions when dealing with his planets changing orbits or leaving the Solar System altogether.
His childhood trauma resulted in severe attachment issues, a fear of abandonment (or him appearing 'clingy' as Mars said in What if the planets were ordered by SIZE? - Part 1) and severe mood swings shown throughout the show.
And although the Sun does care about his planets, this "care" is called into question in the latest episodes, since in the episode The Solar System is EMPTY!? - Part 1 he called Earth "ungrateful", without even trying to find out why he disappeared and then decided to replace him with Venus, while making Mercury a moon of Venus. Later, when his last two planets disappeared, the Sun again found replacements for them in the form of moons. As can be seen from the episode The Solar System... but it's only MOONS! he no longer wants to see other planets in his system, except for Earth, because he believes that they abandoned him and that he doesn't need "few annoying, rebellious planets" considering that their moons can perfectly replace them.
In the episode Before the Crash of Earth and Theia it turns out that Sun apparently doesn't care or believe in love between planets (and most likely he considers it only dangerous stupidity), and will even be ready to separate planets in love forever for their safety, without caring that this breaks their hearts, like he did with Proto-Earth and Theia.
At this moment, the Sun is characterized as a selfish, cruel and heartless star that refuses to listen to anyone and, according to him, is ready to play the role of a villain in order to ensure "the safety" of everyone, but at the same time he himself puts everyone in danger. This is especially seen in the episode What If All Planets Shared ONE Orbit? - Part 2 where, due to being near him for a long time, Neptune and Uranus began to get sick, and the Rocky Planets became dangerously close to a collision with Jupiter, because his gravity attracts them. This once again confirms that the Sun at the moment doesn't care about his own planets and their states, and his obsession with control eventually led to him completely losing his understanding of what is right and what is not.
Sun exhibits major symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder (also known as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder or EUPD) such as fear of abandonment, unstable relationships, affective instability (mood swings), paranoia, explosive anger, acting impulsively and recklessly.
An example of his impulsive and reckless actions is when he banished Jupiter out of the Solar System in Planet X Returns! - Part 3 without giving it a second thought or thinking about how it might effect the Solar System’s balance. Another example would be forcing every planet to share the same orbit (Earth's orbit), ignoring the fact that most of the planets will get pulled towards Jupiter and Saturn (because of their masses being 318x and 95x Earth's respectively), he ignores this because they are sentient planets and hes a sentient star.
Studies say that, "One of the significant factors that can bring on the development of BPD is trauma. Experiencing abuse, experiencing emotional neglect, *being abandoned, or living through other hardships* during childhood can cause a person to develop borderline personality disorder later on life."
Appearances
The Sun is shown in about every video in some way or another, usually as a background character just minding his business.
Abilities
Solar flares
The Sun can shoot strong solar flares, which sometimes can reach the outer solar system, shown in The Adventures Of Uranus And Saturn, where Uranus and Saturn escaped from the incoming solar flares.
Gravitational Shockwave
In Planet X Returns! - Part 2, the Sun felt the existence of an "intruder" and then sent a shockwave which shook the Solar System, causing some asteroids to collide with each other and making Uranus turn upside-down. This ability is used again in the 3rd part.
Asteroid Belt Defense
The Sun can control the Asteroid Belt through his strong gravity and make it go around himself at a high speed as a defense against intruders, shown in Planet X Returns! - Part 3.
Asteroid Belt Arranging
In The Battle of Planet X! - Part 1, The Sun can use his same shockwave (and gravity) to arrange the Asteroid Belt in some sort of racetrack (and some dust particles for some reason).
Spinning Gravity Radiation
In Before the Crash of Earth and Theia, back when he was a young adult, he spinned Proto-Earth and Theia around tossing them into their orbits so they wouldn’t see each other again.
Orbital Alignment
In After The Crash - Part 1, The Sun pulled the inner planets into their correct orbits.
Rotational Alignment
In The Solar System's True Scale - Part 1, the Sun is able to send a gravitational shockwave to force a planet into their axial tilt, seen when he forces Earth into his exact 23.4° rotation and force them to have their accurate rotations, for Earth it was 23 hours 56 minutes and 4 seconds.
Trivia
- Among the four named stars that have appeared in the series, the Sun is the 3rd largest character overall. The largest star featured in the series is Arcturus, followed by Rigil Kentaurus, then Sun, then Toliman, and in last Proxima Centauri.
- Despite this, in The Big Bang Part 1, he's been shown to be slightly bigger than Proxima Centauri, although he was slightly smaller than he was now, meaning he still would've been bigger than Alpha Centauri B.
- Rigil Kentaurus, Toliman, and Proxima Centauri are all thought to be 4.85 - 6.5 billion years old as of today while Arcturus is 5.9 - 8.6 billion years old as of today, making the Sun the youngest star appearing so far.
- It is unclear how these stars were there when the Sun was born, as they definitely were not born in the same cluster that the Sun was born in, and only recently came into view.
- He's the first character to canonically break the fourth wall.
- He is one of the thirteen characters who have their own plushie.
- The Sun technically has the most screentime of any SolarBalls character, as when he does not have a major role, he still appears, mostly in the background of episodes.
- Similar to Io and Jupiter, he has a smaller face relative to his size.
- Similar to Europa, he's the second character to have red eyes when angry. However, his eyes are a slightly dark red, while Europa's eyes were a shade of scarlet.
- He's the first SolarBalls character to appear in an episode before the first official SolarBalls episode, specifically one from MrSpherical, that episode being "Countries create a Sun for reasons".
- He also appears in "USA touches the Sun!".
- As a baby, the Sun seems to have blush in his cheeks.
- He's shown to be afraid of other objects bigger than him.
- He also seems to know every celestial object by voice as shown in Search for Planet X - Part 3 when he knew Titania by her voice.
- He has good vision as he was able to see Uranus and Saturn leave their orbits in "The Adventures Of Uranus And Saturn".
- He's also able to sense when other objects are entering the Solar System when Planet X, Europa, Ganymede and Proteus were returning to the Solar System.
- He used to be considered an antagonist.
- But, it is worth noting that in some episodes he actually acted as an antagonist towards the main characters, which ultimately makes him a semi-antagonist.
- Although, he has recently regained his status as the main antagonist of the "true scale" arc and will likely be one of the antagonists in other future arcs.
- This was eventually confirmed in the episode What If All Planets Shared ONE Orbit? - Part 1 where Sun called himself the Bad guy.
- In the recent episodes of the series, there are hints that his psychological state has become increasingly worse.
- This is indicated by his constantly twitching eyes, uncontrollable laughter and thoughtless actions.
- It is a misconception that the Sun and other stars orbit Sagittarius A*, rather, the stars in the galaxy all orbit around the Milky Way's center of mass. Moreover, unlike the Sun (who comprises 99.86% of all the mass in the solar system), Sagittarius A* only makes up 0.0002% to 0.0003% the mass of the Milky Way. This insignificant portion of the galaxy's mass means the Sun and the other stars in the Milky Way are not gravitational bound to it (except the ones that are directly orbiting it).
