―Neptune, to Uranus in The Earth's Core - Part 3 | ||
Neptune is a planet character who is one of the main protagonists of SolarBalls. He is the 8th planet from the Sun.
Personality
Neptune is considered to be weird, random, and having horrible memory. This is shown when he meets Pluto again after a very long time, because he does not seem to remember the dwarf planet. But right after meeting him and having him introduce himself again, he forgets everything again, causing Pluto to get desperate and go hang out with the other dwarf planets instead. Neptune is also shown to be untrustworthy, where right after promising not to tell the rest of the planets that Uranus stinks, everyone was told about his secret shortly after Venus asks "Tell us what?". Neptune then brushes it off, not acknowledging how angry Uranus was. In "Why is Neptune MISSING!?” his personality was revealed to be caused by the insanity from loneliness for 165 years because of his orbit, leading him to make imaginary friends out of asteroids in the Kuiper Belt, notably Guillermo. Neptune is considered as being the comic relief character due to his personality.
However, Neptune’s memory and sanity seem to be steadily improving. In The Moons of Uranus, he remembered that both him and Uranus had moons, he shows sympathy towards Uranus’s moons, and even lectured him about scaring them away. Neptune also offered to look for them with him and suggested Uranus to apologize instead of acting like it was nothing. Another example is how Neptune memorized all of the names of his moons in “The Moons of Neptune” - the only giant planet to do so. According to Triton, his little moons love him, and he loves them.
In “What if the planets were ordered by SIZE? - Part 1”, Neptune is seen much as more sane and intelligent than his usual self, which he credits to his much closer, shorter, and less lonely orbit. He wears old-styled glasses and takes up a British accent when in Jupiter’s orbit.
Trivia
- Neptune is the only planet in SolarBalls who has been shown to physically shape-shift, mainly due to the fact that he doesn't have a solid surface.
- It is however possible that Uranus, has this same ability, and has simply not used it due to lack of trying/knowledge, as he is also an ice giant.
- It is unknown if Jupiter and Saturn also have some form of this ability due to also lacking solid surfaces as gas giants. Jupiter has been shown to “stretch” himself (Is the Moon REALLY leaving us?) but it is possible this is within a typical planet’s normal abilities, additionally the distance between Saturn’s mouth and eyes does occasionally greatly change (Why does Saturn have rings?; Venus wants a makeover!) but it’s possible this is due to perspective rather than shapeshifting.
- He is the third character in Solar Balls to have broken the fourth wall, which can be seen in the sponsor section of Mission to Titan - Part 2.
- Neptune is the only outer planet whose moons have all been shown with a face and explicitly named.
- He is also the only outer planet shown to remember all the names of his satellites.
- However, two satellites are still to be shown, mainly due to their recent discoveries, One of them is S/2002 N 5.
- Neptune apparently doesn't know what Earth is in “Replacing the Sun for a BLACK HOLE!?”, and yet somehow knows Earthlings. This can be easily attributed to his inconsistent memory.
- Despite Neptune's apparent memory loss, he retains the ability to recall characters such as his moons or Uranus. This might be due to how his mind prioritizes memories aligned with personal significance, and instead forgets things that are of little importance to him.
- The color of Neptune in SolarBalls uses the color of Neptune from the original, oversaturated photo from NASA. In reality, Neptune is much paler and lighter like Uranus.
- Titania and Oberon point this out to Uranus in What If All Planets Shared ONE Orbit? - Part 2, to which Uranus responds that he has always seen Neptune in the colour that he is depicted as in SolarBalls. Ariel attributes this to the Mandela effect, to which the other Uranian moons agree.
- Neptune often blinks each eye separately. (This is called "lizard blinking".)
- Neptune is the only character seen with a computer outside of sponsor segments.
- Almost all of Neptune's moons were shown, so far there were 14: Triton, Naiad, Galatea, Nereid, Thalassa, Halimede, Despina, Sao, Larissa, Laomedeia, Hippocamp, Psamathe, Proteus, Neso.
- As of 2026, Neptune has 16 confirmed moons. The last two, named S/2002 N 5 (2002) and S/2021 N 1 (2021), were not shown in the show.
- The list of Neptune's satellites also includes his former moons in the past.
- Neptune appears to believe he and Uranus are cousins, as seen in Uranus = Neptune? where he blatantly replies, "We are cousins."
- Neptune is usually very kind and compassionate and innocent, but seems to still have reservations over the origin of Triton, as he refused to tell him where he came from despite apparently remembering. This implies that unlike the vast majority of events, the capturing of Triton might be a sensitive issue to him.
- In fact, it is earlier implied in “Where does Pluto REALLY come from?” that Neptune recalls at least the overarching sequence of events that led to Triton's capture, as he said that Pluto and Charon reminded him of Triton after they were briefly sucked into his gravity.
- His female moons all do not have eyelashes.
- In the episode ‘Uranus = Neptune?’, it is implied that Neptune left for some unknown reason.
- This is further backed up in The Big Bang episodes where Neptune and Uranus are hanging out normally.
- Some scientific models suggest that Neptune and Uranus swapped orbits at one point, with Uranus originally being the farther planet from the Sun, although this is yet to be confirmed.
- Grand Tack models suggest that Neptune (and Uranus') orbits were pushed further out as a result of Jupiter's migration in the Grand Tack.
- This is further backed up in The Big Bang episodes where Neptune and Uranus are hanging out normally.
- He is the 5th largest object in the Solar System in terms of radius (putting him between Uranus and Earth), and the 4th largest in terms of mass, with him having a greater mass than Uranus despite his smaller radius.
- This makes Neptune the smallest of the giants (even including Planet X, who in the show has a radius of 25,600 km) in terms of radius.
- Notably, Neptune is the densest of the giant planets, although all the rocky planets are still significantly denser due to their composition.
- In reality, if Planet X really existed, it would be smaller than Neptune and Uranus.
- It is scientifically theorized that Neptune will eventually get rings similar to Saturn's due to his moon Triton being expected to approach Neptune's Roche Limit and be destroyed in 3.6 billion years.
- Neptune used to be in a secular resonance with Saturn, however the destruction of the hypothetical moon Chrysalis cause Saturn to break free from this resonance, creating it's tilt.
- It is unknown if either Neptune or Saturn know about this event.
- He is the farthest planet from the Sun in the Solar System, but he doesn't have the lowest recorded temperature.
- The coldest temperature on record was on Uranus at -224° C, but overall Neptune has a lower average temperature (-195° C vs -214° C) and this makes Neptune the coldest planet in the Solar System. Because of this, many argue as to whether Neptune or Uranus is colder.
- Neptune has an orbital velocity of 5.4 km/s, making him the slowest of all the current planets.
- Pluto orbits at around 4.7 km/s, so prior to 2006 the title of "slowest planet" went to him.
- He's the third character who suffers changes with his features after Earth and Titan.
