―Mercury, to the Moon | ||
Mercury is one of the main protagonists in SolarBalls. He is the first planet from the Sun. He is the smallest planet, and and formerly held the title of Venus' moon, due to the Sun's intervention in The Solar System is EMPTY!? - Part 1.
Design
Mercury is a light brown sphere with darker brown on the right side (his left) and several craters. His eyes are farther apart than most planets, and they are just above his mouth.
In his early version he has a brown background color with noticeable lava flows and some cracks.
In What if the Sun disappeared?, he had a tiny blue spot next to his eye for some reason. Though, in My Best Friend, the Sun!, it was removed.
Personality
Mercury is a relatively shy planet and is easily intimidated. Due to him being the smallest planet in the Solar System, he often gets thoughts on what happened with Pluto (demotion from planet group). Because of his small size, he is often the target of bullying by Venus, and occasionally, Earth. He is good-natured and careful with his words, (which is now debatable considering he called Earth’s attempt a “stunt”) and he tries to avoid hurting the feelings of the Sun when he asks if they are friends or not. Mercury is slowly becoming more tolerant and assertive, standing up to both Venus and the Sun.
However, there are times when Mercury would go too far when standing up for himself, such as repeatedly teasing Venus about his name in "Venus wants a makeover!" or getting himself knocked out by an asteroid. Despite these moments, Mercury is overall a kind-hearted planet who is slowly learning to stand up for himself.
In The Solar System Trials - Part 2, he and Venus became the representatives of the planet side, as both planets do not have moons - making them unbiased. Mercury also having a different point of view than the other planets because he doesn't have any moons.
Despite his passive-aggressiveness towards Venus, Mercury was seen working together with him during the “Solar System Trials”, as they are the only planets without moons.
For instance, in The Solar System Trials - Part 3, Mercury does relate to the moons due to him being the smallest planet, so it's hard for him to stand up to a celestial body bigger than him.
Also, in the episode After The Crash - Part 1. He and Mars had to hold Venus back from going to where Proto and Theia collided, saying its too dangerous.
Trivia
- Despite being depicted in SolarBalls as a golden-brown planet, Mercury's real-life counterpart is dark grey.
- This was possibly done to differentiate him from characters like Luna.
- Mercury is the first SolarBalls character to have the new shadowing around him that every planet has.
- In What if the planets were ordered by SIZE? - Part 1 and Horror Stories... with Venus, Mercury mentions an Earthling satellite that orbited him and later crashed into his surface. This is likely a mention of NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft that orbited Mercury for many years and eventually crashed into its surface in 2015.
- Mercury is the fastest celestial body in the Solar System (barring the Sun, who orbits the Milky Ways center of mass at 230 km/s), moving at about 47.8 km/s.
- Mercury's axial tilt is the smallest of all the planets in the Solar System, at approximately 0.01 (or about 1/30). Because of this small tilt, Mercury has virtually no seasons.
- Mercury is the first major celestial body by release date to have ‘died’ in the series, however he came back to life very quickly. Chronologically, he is the second.
- In the episode Is the Moon REALLY leaving us? Earth jokingly calls Mercury "Venus's lost moon", which may refers to the weak hypothesis that Mercury was once indeed a satellite of Venus before it left it and became the closest planet to the Sun (although this is a joke hypothesis).
- Ironically, after a long time, Mercury actually become a moon of Venus by order of the Sun.
- Mercury is the first planet to be reassigned as a moon. Other reassignments include Triton's capture causing him to go from dwarf planet to moon, and Pluto with Ceres demotion from planet to dwarf planet.
- Mercury knows about Theia, just like Venus and Mars, making Earth the only rocky planet who didn't know who she was.
- However, in the episode Lost Earth - Part 3 Earth meets her and learns the truth about her and Proto-Earth.
- As of The Solar System is EMPTY!? - Part 1, Mercury is the only planet to never have been seen to have a moon, since Venus temporarily had Mercury assigned to him as his moon by the Sun.
- Mercury also has had a voice change during the early days of the show.
