―Moon | ||
The Moon, better known by their preferred name Luna, is one of the main protagonists in SolarBalls. He is Earth's only natural satellite.
For convenience, this article will use “Luna”, their origin and preferred name.
Personality
Luna is kind and stays quiet most of the time while Earth talks to other planets. He does help Earth to sustain life, yet they weren’t really appreciated by Earth and felt like they don’t matter to him. Despite this, he's stuck by Earth & acted to help. Like his friend Titan, the Moon recognizes, and is optimistic and speaks out against injustice, but, unlike Titan (who ultimately followed Ganymede's plan of a more violent attack), tries to stop it through peaceful methods to reach a better level of understanding.
He believe that everyone is unique in their own way, as he said to himself when he met Titan. He is respectful of other celestial bodies but is still honest about how he feels about them, shown when he tells Astrodude that Mars' moons, Phobos & Deimos, are “freaking weird”.
They state that they don’t like being called "Earth's Moon" and wants to be called by their origin and preferred name, Luna (Latin name for the Moon), although they have never shown dislike towards their official name. They commonly get interrupted when they try to tell anyone, similarly to Astrodude.
Despite his cheerful and calm demeanor, Luna can get rather cranky & enraged when they don't get their way, as shown in Mission to Titan - Part 2 and at Jupiter is BACK - Part 2.
As the series progresses, Luna becomes more protective of Earth, especially after hearing about Jupiter’s actions on Planet X as shown when he moved in front of Earth before he was banished.
However, it has been shown that they don’t always care about Earth, such as in the episode Jupiter IS BACK! - Part 2 where Luna seemed to care more about SolarCards than the well-being of his planet. Despite all this, Luna will always be protective of Earth even in serious moments, such as the time when Earth tried to risk his life in The Earth is heading to the SUN!? and when he was unconscious in the Kuiper Belt during The Earth's Origins Arc while was being attacked by Ceres in the name of entropy. It is also worth noting that after the Earth disappeared, and realizing that he and Mars weren't worried about his well-being at that moment, Luna immediately regretted his actions, and when the Earth finally woke up in the Kuiper Belt, he almost cried from happiness and relief for his planet.
Dark Side
Luna has two faces. The lesser seen side calls himself “The Dark Side of the Moon” (abbreviated as DSOTM).
Dark Side has a similar personality to Luna, albeit with a more ominous tone. He tries hard to be the "edgy" one, telling Luna to crash against the Earth and talking about how he’s always enclosed in shadow as they're “tidally locked”.
When he’s not being edgy, he’s either sleeping or looking off into the emptiness of space while Luna watches Earth & Mars play cards.
Trivia
- He has a nasal, monotoned voice, similar to Mercury.
- Luna can be seen at the end of the episode "Veritasium becomes a Space Explorer!", making him the first celestial body in the Solar System besides Earth to chronologically appear in the series.
- All the moons and some of the planets of the Solar System call him "Earth's Moon" but he appears to hate the name, preferring to be called "Luna" as revealed by Earth in "The Moon Revolution - Part 3".
- Even though he doesn't prefer to be simply called "Moon," (the official English name) the word "Luna" is still the word for "moon" in Latin and in most of its descendant languages (those being Spanish, Italian, & Romanian)
- This is problematic because in the Spanish dub, the Moon was always called Luna from the beginning or "Luna de la Tierra" (Earth's Moon), and, moreover, bodies orbiting planets are referred to as lunas in the same way as moons in English (that is, characters like Ganymede, Titan or Charon are referred to as lunas of their respective planets), which is a serious inconsistency between the two versions, since Luna cannot be differentiated by name from the other lunas.
- Furthermore, terms like "Moon Revolution" were translated as "Revolución Lunar" (Lunar Revolution).
- To tell the truth, the correct and formal designation for celestial bodies orbiting planets is natural satellite (something that is never mentioned in the series); "moon" (lower case) as a generic term for natural satellites is just a colloquial derivation of Moon (capitalized), the actual proper name for the Earth's satellite in English.
- What's worth noting, however, is that Luna is the divine personification of the Moon itself in Roman mythology,[1] whose Greek equivalent was called Selene, and both were identified with the hunt deities Diana and Artemis respectively.
- Strangely, Earth doesn't call him "Luna" in "What if the planets were ordered by SIZE? - Part 1", and he didn't seem to mind it.
- Luna also doesn't appear to mind being called "The Moon" either, as seen in "How the Moon Landing changed EVERYTHING?". However, this may be due to the nonexistence of the concept of his name being "Luna."
- The Moon Club - Part 1 is the first episode where the characters all refer to him as "Luna."
- Even though he doesn't prefer to be simply called "Moon," (the official English name) the word "Luna" is still the word for "moon" in Latin and in most of its descendant languages (those being Spanish, Italian, & Romanian)
- Luna has a rather large face compared to other moons of his size.
- In the "What If the Moon Approached the Earth" arc, it was shown that the Dark Side of The Moon doesn't have control over his shared body when Luna is asleep. This could imply that Luna has the dominant personality of the two.
- The only exception for now is observed in Mission to Titan - Part 2, when, after getting mad at Titan after having forced Astrodude to go into his underground ocean in search for life, he let the Dark Side of the Moon to "take it away", and threatened to crash into Titan if he did not let that Earthling go. After taking the control over their body back, Luna said that he should do this more (letting his Dark Side take control).
- He is one of the nine characters to have their own plush.
- Luna, although the fifth-largest satellite, he is the largest and most massive satellite in relation to his parent planet.
- It was theorized that Theia's collision with Proto-Earth caused the Moon to form. In universe this is canon fact, however this is a theory in real life (though widely accepted).
- As seen at the ending of After the Crash - Part 2, he formed and woke up first before Earth.
- This technically makes Luna slightly older than Earth by a couple of minutes, but they are still the same age.
- However, in real life, on the contrary, it is believed that the Moon formed a little later than the Earth.
- In How the Earth and Moon Formed we can see that he indeed woke up before Earth, and getting scared of the planets surrounding him after they realized he was one of the celestial bodies that formed from Theia & Proto-Earth's collision.
- Luna is also seen to know Earth the moment he formed, not questioning him when Earth was addressing him about everyone staring at him after forming.
- In the episode The Earth's Core - Part 2 it also turns out that he & Earth are siblings, being children of Proto-Earth & Theia.
- This makes them the first celestial bodies to have parents.
- In The Earth's Core - Part 3 it is seen that he has a flashback of Proto-Earth & Theia after telling Ceres to "stop this," while the same dwarf planet was heading towards Earth to collide with him, just like Theia's name triggered Earth, Proto's words to Theia telling her to "stop this (about life being possible)" trigger several memories in Luna, including Proto saying "I love you too, Theia," right before their kiss and collision.
- It is shown that Luna uses he/him/they/them pronouns when Earth said in The Solar System’s True Scale - Part 1 "What do you mean? Luna is my moon and I'm their planet."
- This is also confirmed in the episode The Earth Awakens where Proto-Earth asked Earth to tell Luna that he and Theia are proud of "them" too.
- This currently makes Luna the first character to use the pronouns they/their.
- In the Alternate Universe, he is the only moon that was destroyed.
- Presumably, Phobos and Deimos were also destroyed when Astrodude destroyed Mars, but they weren't shown awakened, leaving their fate unknown.
